Sled dog names may be given to any pup that is commonly used to pull
sleds in areas where snow is common. However, these titles may also be
used simply because you like the sound and can apply them to any breed
of pooch.
The most common used for sledding is the Malamute, which is bred specifically for their strength and stamina as well as their furry coats which keep them warm. They are loyal dogs, often saving their owners during storms by piling atop the person to prevent them from freezing. They are beautiful sledding pups with long fur, often grey, white, or black with white points.
Other breeds of canines can be used for pulling sleds such as the
Siberian Husky. In the Lower 48, just about any breed of pooch can be
trained to pull children on sleds during the winter months. So this term
is not limited to any breed.
Aurora: The northern lights are created by the aurora
borealis, part of the magnetic field of Earth. This would make a perfect
choice for a lady canine.
Blizzard: This refers to a storm in which lots of snow falls, often creating whiteout conditions. Any canine of either gender would be proud of this choice of name.
Ice: This choice refers to the conditions in the far north where most working dogs perform duty pulling and sledding people and supplies. It's perfect for a pooch with a white coat and can be used for girl or boy.
Igloo: Eskimos construct shelters from ice blocks to protect them when away from their homes. This word makes a great sled dog name for either gender.
Juno: The title of an Alaskan city, this can be used for either boy or girl pups and has an interesting sound when called. There won't be other sled pups on the snow with this title.
Laska: This idea is a shortened form of Alaska and refers to the American State where sled dogs are used to pull loads most commonly. It could work for a boy but sounds more feminine so it's perfect for a lady pup.
Snowball: Sleds require snow in order to operate properly and if you own a white canine, this sled dog name would reflect the environment of the northern lands. It works equally well for males or females.
Stormy: Snow often falls in a full-blown storm making this name work well for any pup whose heritage is of working as a puller of loads. It can be used for boys or girls equally well.
