There are many types of small house dogs available through the world. Breeds of small dogs are becoming increasingly popular as companion dogs because they are extremely portable, adaptable to nearly any living environment, easier to take care of and cheaper to upkeep. As well, these types of small dogs have a reputation for being happy and energetic, making them a great pet for a family, but also an excellent companion for someone living alone in a small apartment or for an older couple that doesn’t need the hassle of a dog requiring excess exercise. Small dogs are also known for having a longer life expectancy, meaning your best pal will be around for an average of 14-16 years. As well, many experience less health problems than large breeds that deal with hip dysplasia, arthritis, or joint problems, although you will want to do some research regarding health issues that small dogs might have. For instance, Dachshunds are prone to back injuries and disc problems because of their short stature. Jumping on and off couches can cause injuries that larger dogs might not experience. Keep in mind, as well, when looking for the right types of small house dogs for you, that just because these dogs are small does not mean that they are always cute and sweet. Some have a reputation for being temperamental, finicky and sometimes downright spoiled. Before deciding on certain types ofsmall house dogs, simply because you think a particular breed is adorable, you will want to do some research, as some are better suited with children or other pets, while others may not be. Often small dogs, fewer than 15 pounds or so, are considered part of the “toy” or “miniature” group. Some varieties, like the Poodle, are actually a smaller version of the Standard Poodle. You may find some small dog breeds available in weights as little as 4-6 pounds at full growth. Remember that while a small dog often means being easier to exercise, less to feed and less to clean up after, often times small dogs will need to be carefully watched outdoors in the cold, as well as around other large dogs, as they are more vulnerable to injury. If you live in a cold climate zone and are interested in a small dog, you might want to consider small fluffy dog breeds, like a Shih Tzu or a Pomeranian. Small dog breeds are known for being difficult to housebreak and to train because of their headstrong personalities. This means it is important to be consistent from the time they are puppies and continue this consistency throughout their life. Overall though, small dog breeds are growing in popularity because they are wonderful family dogs, as well as easy going companions that can travel the world with their owners. Most just enjoy snuggling up while their owners watch a movie and many are content with a little romp in the backyard.
