Dog Walking Services

Tips On How To Pick The Right One

Finding good dog walking services can be more difficult than it sounds. It may seem as easy as picking up the phone and calling someone to come over and walk your favorite pooch, but you really should take more time to carefully consider who will be walking your dog.

You want to make sure you find someone that is reliable, trustworthy and fairly priced. Remember that most owners who hire dog walking services are busy people that don’t have time to do it themselves. This means you will most likely be trusting dog walkers to come into your home and get your dog. In order for that to happen with some peace of mind, you really need to spend some time determining which walking business is right for you.

Ask Around...
You can usually count on excellent references from sources like a veterinarian, a pet food store, a grooming salon or even from avid dog owners. Remember not to take one person’s opinion as proof, but instead talk with several different types of people or dog services to form a solid consensus.

License...
While you may very well find a good, friendly dog walker without a business license, you can be sure a dog walking business will be reputable if they have taken the time to apply for a business license. This also means if you disagree with recommendations or find out that your dog is being mistreated in any way, they can be reported to the Better Business Bureau so that other dog owners will be warned about their lacking services. Also, since they might need to enter your house while you're at work, should personal property be missing or broken, having a license will give you an address to find them at. Make sure you make a copy of their license for safekeeping.

Referral Appointment...
A good dog walker will not simply set up a time to begin coming over to walk your dogs, but will instead visit your home while you are there to meet the dog and get acquainted with you. This gives you time to get a feel for whether or not the dog walker and your dog will get along and whether you think they would be the right person for the job.

Don’t forget to ask important questions like how many dogs they walk at a time, how long the walk lasts, and whether they take the dogs to the park or simply go around the block. It is also important to find out if their services include feeding the dogs and providing them with water if necessary. As well, how they plan to manage more than one dog at a time (i.e. what will they do in the case of a dog fight or when people walk by on a business sidewalk).

Good dog walking services will also deem it necessary for the dog owners to provide proof of vaccination records. This is not only for the protection of the dog walking service but for other dogs as well. In case a fight breaks out, you want to make sure your dog is protected from rabies or other dog related illnesses.

Special Needs...
If your dog has special needs, such as taking medication, or you have a new puppy, you might need to spend some extra time seeking out a dog walking service that can provide extra attention to that pet. Finding a business that isn’t overwhelmed with pets is probably the best. If the dog walking service is extremely busy, they might not be able to take the time to help out with teaching your pet proper walking habits or with taking it slow on an older or sick dog.
