Dog Fitness: A Few Warnings Before You Start

When it comes to your dogs fitness, here's a few things to be mindful of before starting, especially in the area of roadwork:

Have your veterinarian sign off on any exercise program, making sure that your dog hasn't any joint problems that rule out any particular kind of exercise. Make sure that you build up slowly, especially if your dog is overweight. Let your dog set the pace, and check the bottoms of his feet (the smooth parts are called pads) often for tears or cuts.

Exercise when the weather is cool - dogs aren't as efficient at lowering their body temperature as we are - carry water, always, and know the signs of heat stress: glassy eyes, frantic panting. If your dog gets in trouble, get him wet and call your veterinarian immediately.

Do not force puppies to sustain a pounding pace, especially on pavement, lest you injure their developing bones. That means no jogging or bicycling until they're through adolescence - two years old is a good ballpark figure, but check with your veterinarian.

Dog Fitness: A Few Good Dog Exercise Tips

Fetch is a fantastic way to give your dog aerobic exercise. Get an old tennis racket to get some real distance on those tennis balls. Jogging is another way to get canine hearts pumping. If you don't jog and your dog is well-behaved on his leash, you may have a friend or neighbor who'd welcome the company and the added security. Swimming is a natural for retriever types, and if you're lucky enough to be near an off-leash dog park, play with other dogs is a first-rate exercise option.

Bicycling is another great exercise, and three products are on the market designed to help you bicycle safely. They attach to the bicycle and so allow you to keep both of your hands on the handlebars - a much safer plan than holding onto a leash with one hand and the bike with the other. The three products on the market are the Springer, the Bicycle Dog Leash, and the K9 Cruiser.

Roadwork such as jogging or tagging alongside a bicycle can be good for dogs, but remember to pace your dog properly: A brisk trot is ideal.

Thinking of inventing an indoor dog exerciser? A treadmill for dogs? Don't bother: They've been around for years. One such product is The Trotter, a variable-speed treadmill used by show-dog handlers to keep dogs in top condition for the ring. The Trotter can be yours for a mere $1,000 or more so keep that high price in mind.

There's a few caveats to keep in mind when it comes to exercising your pooch.

What are they? Tune in tomorrow!

Dog Toys: 9 Tips For Choosing The Right One Pt .2

Evaluating dog toys, and choosing the right one part 2.

Here are the 9 tips promised yesterday (we never let down our faithful readers) about how to choose and evaluate dog toys.

So if you're sitting down, buckled in your seat...Here We Go!

When evaluating the safety of any toy, consider:

1. The toy should not be small enough to be inhaled or swallowed whole.

2. The toy should not have parts that can be pulled off and swallowed.

3. The toy should not have any sharp parts.

4. Avoid linear toys such as pantyhose, strings, ribbons and rubber bands that can be swallowed; such toys can be particularly dangerous.

5. Use chewable toys with caution and under supervision. If your dog can swallow a big hunk of it, it's probably not really safe. Bones and hooves are responsible for many cracked rear teeth, resulting in expensive dental bills.

6. If your dog is obsessed with dissecting toys to remove the squeakers, only give him squeaky toys when you can supervise.

7. Avoid children's toys stuffed with unsafe fillings, such as beans.

8. Never give your dog a container in which the dog's head could become lodged. Dogs cannot pull these containers off and have suffocated when they became stuck.

9. Never leave a dog unsupervised with a toy that contains a battery.

Some toys require a person on the other end. Balls, tug toys and chase toys are some examples. Don't think you can hand your dog a toy that requires a person and expect her to be entertained while you're gone. She will turn to a toy that doesn't require your presence in order to be fun, such as the arm of your sofa.

Now that you know more about dog toys, learn about a few games you can play with your pooch. Here's the Permalink...

Dog Toys: 9 Tips For Choosing The Right One Pt .1

There's more to dog toys than meets the eye. Yes, there's thousands to choose from at any local pet store, but for the safety of your dog, this 2 part series will delve into the do's and don'ts when choosing the right toy for your pup.

Once you've read this series, perhaps it might be wise to look at your dogs current toys to see if there's anything unsafe about them.

Here's part one...

As a dog owner, you probably know from experience that the most expensive dogs toys are the ones your dog creates herself from your furniture, shoes and other stuff. You know that by handing your dog a toy whenever her jaws wrap around your cherished belongings, you can redirect her efforts to something more acceptable. You know that dog toys are a bargain.

The last few years have seen an explosion in exciting toy design. Never before have such stimulating toys been commercially available for dogs. You can supplement those toys with equally stimulating homemade toys.

Different dogs need different toys. Some dogs can only be trusted with the toughest toys on the market, whereas others will treasure fragile toys with utmost care. Gentle dogs can play with squeaky toys; soft latex tends to be more dog-resistant than hard plastic. Gentle dogs can also have stuffed animal toys, but be sure to remove any plastic eyes or noses. You can buy bunches of these toys at thrift stores and just bring out a few at a time.

Part two will discuss how to evaluate a dog toy, and will give 9 tips to help you to do so.
