Dog Medical Insurance

4 Things To Consider Before Making Your Purchase

With the interest in dogs continuing to rise, the need for dog medical insurance continues to rise as well. For those of us who love our dogs, we want them to stay healthy.

Unfortunately, though, just as health care for humans is expensive, health care for dogs can be expensive as well. With this in mind, many dog owners are opting for dog health insurance. If you are among the many dog owners who has decided pet insurance is right for you, you will definitely want to spend some time researching what type of insurance is right for you and your pet before actually purchasing a policy.

Remember that as with human health insurance policies, there are many different dog medical insurance policies available. So spend some time deciding which policy is best for your pooch.

Breed of Dog…
One of the most important points to consider before purchasing pet health insurance for your dog is what type of dog you own. From here you can do some research or speak with a local breeder or veterinarian regarding the types of health issues your dog might encounter in the future.

For instance, many do breeds are prone to knee and back injuries because of the pounding on their joints from running, fetching, jumping on and off the furniture or into and out of cars. With this in mind, you can assess that you might need an insurance policy with a low deductible on surgeries, in case your pet will need a knee or back surgery in the future.

Age and Health…
Depending on whether you have just purchased a new puppy or if you acquired an older dog from a shelter, this will play a huge role in the type of insurance you receive. If you have a fit, young adult dog, you probably only need enough insurance to cover a yearly examination and an average deductible in case of an emergency medical situation.

Many dog owners will assume that a new puppy does not need dog insurance because they are so young and healthy, but actually puppies will receive more vaccinations in the first year of their life. These vaccinations can be rather expensive!

As well, if you have an older dog, the likelihood that they will need to take medication for an ailment is greater. Modern medicine has made it possible for older dogs to live longer without pain, but unfortunately this medication can be expensive. Just as well, many older dogs will need minor to major surgeries to correct problems from glaucoma to hip dysplasia.

Veterinarians…
One important consideration to make when deciding on pet health insurance is whether your veterinarian will accept the insurance coverage you have purchased, or whether the insurance company will allow you to continue at the same veterinarian. It would be a shame if you found a wonderful vet that loves your dog, only to find out you have to switch because of the coverage plan you purchased.

If you know which veterinarian you want to continue working with, simply ask them for some recommendations on quality pet insurance.

Reviewing Plans…
After you have decided which veterinarian you want to stick with and have determined the amount of dog medical insurance you will need for your pet, you should take the time to review several different pet insurance policies. Keep in mind that all are not created equal and that some will be more expensive than others, depending on your pet’s needs.

You will want to carefully consider the type of coverage each insurance policy provides. Many pet insurance companies only offer coverage for basic services, like routine exams and medication, but will not cover major surgeries. Others will cover these but with a high deductible or with a huge co-pay.

When it comes to dog medical insurance, remember that some insurance companies are better than others, so spend time researching which one is right for you and your dog.
