A Small Expense To Have Your Dog Returned Home

To some owners, dog ID tags can be confusing, as it seems that some dogs are a constant clanging of endless tags. While some owners will have their puppy wear any number of different ones, you might consider if there is a way you can combine them. Remember that a dog identification tag has a completely different function from other varieties that dogs are required to wear, but if you can combine them, this might make for easier upkeep.

Dog Name Tags
A dog ID tag, or dog name tag, is a type of tag that is not required by the state or by any city, but is recommended in case your family pet becomes lost or stolen. These are referred to as personalized dog tags that will have important contact information for the owners, such as an address, a home phone number, a name and an owner’s name.

You can purchase a dog ID tag at your local veterinary clinic, online or at a local pet store for around $5-$15, depending on the type you purchase. These can be personalized with your individual pet’s name, along with contact information and any medical needs or a vet’s number in case he becomes lost or stolen.

The tags almost always come in a type of metal, but are offered in plastic as well, and will be engraved with this information. It should be placed on the leash hook of his collar and worn at all times.

Some states and cities will require other forms of dog ID tags, so if you are required to have them, you may want to see if you can consolidate to avoid the clanging and upkeep of several different ones:

Rabies Tags
Most states will require that dogs have a yearly or every two year rabies shot in case they bite another dog or a human being. After they have received the shot from their veterinarian, they will receive a tag. It is recommended that owners place this on their collars so that it is known their rabies vaccinations are up to date if they are found astray or if they harm someone.

Some veterinarians will provide a service that allows for engraving on the opposite side of the rabies tag information. Ask your vet clinic if they provide this service for an additional charge.

City or County Registration Tags
Many different towns and counties in the United States require local residents to register their dogs within the community. For a small fee, the dog and owner’s name will be registered in a database and the dog will be given a county or city tag. This will identify the dog to the local animal control if they are ever found lost and are taken to the pound. It can help prevent them from being adopted to someone else or put to sleep.

Often times the city or county tag will provide owner contact information or contact information can be added to the opposite side a dog tag for an additional fee.

Medical Alert Tags
Owners of a puppy with special medical conditions, such as epilepsy or that are blind or deaf, may want to consider purchasing a medical alert dog tag for their pet. In the event that your pet becomes lost or stolen, the tag will describe the medical condition and will also list a name and phone number of their veterinarian. This may be used in place of a personalized tag, as long as it has updated contact information and medical information.

Specialty Tags
Designer and novelty tags that read the dog’s name in bright colors or that sparkle or appear like jewelry can be purchased. Unfortunately, most of these tags are just novelties that hang off of the dog’s collar, but do not provide a space to engrave contact information. It is best not to rely solely on these specialty dog ID tags unless they have a place for important contact information.
