Dog Houses

Just Like Humans...A Dogs Home Is His Castle

For owners who plan to keep their dogs outside, an investment in one of the many dog houses out there to choose from is an absolute must.
Whether your dog will just be outdoors while you are away at work or you plan to have them sleeping outdoors, giving them a place to go for shelter and shade is money well spent. If you are away from home when a storm strikes, you will at least be able to rest easy knowing your dog is safely out of the storm.

  • Portable Dog Houses Often referred to as igloos, because they resemble a small igloo, with a dome or oval shape and a circular opening, these types of abodes are great for owners who don’t have a permanent location for their dog. Usually made from a heavy-duty plastic, portable houses can simply be picked up and moved inside when the weather gets cold or when the family moves. Of course, these igloos are usually smaller in size, since they are so readily portable, so this style might not be suitable for a large dog, over 70-80 pounds.

  • Heated Dog Houses The majority of dogs living in a climate cold enough to require a heating unit for their house will actually have a pretty tough weather resistant coat that will help to keep them warm. Still, even the toughest dog will need a warm place to rest during extremely cold weather conditions, usually from 20 degrees Fahrenheit and below. If you live in these weather conditions and think your pup will be outside for any length of time, you may want to consider installing a heater unit to the side of your dog’s house. These can be purchased for between $300-$500.

  • Air Conditioned Houses Although A/C for your pooches house might seem a little over the top, if you live in a climate where the weather reaches the 90s or above in the summer and you have a strictly outdoor dog, this may be a necessity. While you usually cannot buy a house that is already equipped with air conditioning, you can buy a small electric or battery operated air conditioning unit meant for a dog’s house for around $400-$500.

  • Wooden Dog Houses If you want to spend a little money investing in a nice house that will match the wooden deck and that will withstand the weather, you can order just about any size custom made wooden house for your pet. These small wooden buildings are most commonly built of cedar or oak and range from a simple square house, to luxurious and designer doggie pads with swinging glass doors and even air conditioning. Of course the more fancier you get the more expensive they will be, with average wooden houses costing between $150-$300. Most wooden houses will come insulated, so that there really isn’t a need for heat in the wintertime, although this option is still always possible.

  • Insulated Dog Houses If you don’t want to spend a few hundred dollars on a heater to house your dog, you may instead consider a heavy-duty plastic house that has insulation inside to keep your puppies house warmer on those cold winter nights. Many of these insulated houses will also come with a heater kit that isn’t quite as fancy as an actual heater, but will provide warmth from an electric heating pad that lies on the floor of the house. Insulated houses will start around $200, although a heater kit may cost an additional $50-$100 to purchase.

As you can see, dog houses, just like dogs themselves, come in all shapes and sizes. So please consider all factors pertaining to your own dogs shape and size, as well as your living conditions, and your dog will love you for it!
