Tour the
Facility... It would be silly to just call
up a doggie daycare and make an appointment for your dog to start going there
without actually viewing the facility and meeting the staff. Go check out the
facility and make sure things are clean, organized and that there is a good dog
versus staff ratio, as well as good facilities for the dogs to get some
exercise. If you walk in and there is one staff member and only two large kennel
runs, then you know your pooch will only get limited exercise and not much
attention.
If you can, take your dog with you when you tour the
facility. Doing so will not only allow you to see how your dog reacts to the
surroundings, but will let you see how the employees react to your dog. Are they
loving and kind to your pooch? Or is your dog just one of the bunch?
Check the
Requirements... Before sending your dog,
you want to make sure there are requirements for vaccinations and spaying or
neutering. As well, make sure the dog day care facility screens for the
temperament and behavior of fellow dogs. Remember that at reputable facilities,
they will require that all dogs be vaccinated and spayed/neutered before they
begin attending to ensure that they do not infect other dogs with an illness or
will not impregnate a female dog. As well, proper behavior should be required of
all dogs that will be at the daycare.
Veterinary
Relationship... Some doggie daycares may
have a veterinarian on staff, but other smaller facilities will not be able to
afford a full-time veterinarian. Either way, be sure to ask if they have a good
relationship with the veterinarian or if one is easily accessible in case of an
emergency. Remember that your dog will be playing with other dogs while at the
dog day care and will be away from your supervision, so if something happens you
want to be sure they will receive immediate medical attention.
