Dog Collars
Knowing What's Out There Can Help You Make A Better Choice
There are endless varieties of dog collars available. Before purchasing one for your pooch, it is best to consider the reasons why you need to purchase one and what type will work best with your pet.
Designer Dog Collars If you just want a novelty collar for your pet, there are endless varieties of designer collars available to choose from. These include sports collars, luxury collars that have rhinestones embedded in the material, and even handcrafted leather ones that come in a variety of different leather stained colors. Most of the designer ones will need to be purchased at a specialty dog store or can often be ordered at an online designer dog company. You will often be able to find matching leashes for many of these fancy designer collars, so that the entire leash and collar set coordinates! Keep in mind that these designer specialty collars will almost always cost more than a basic one would.

Collars that Light Up or Reflect If you have a lot of land or often take your dog for walks off the leash at night, it may be a good idea to invest in a lighted dog collar. The light on these can be turned on or off before a dog is let off the leash or is let out in the yard to play at night. Some will just be a steady red or yellow light, while others will blink to make the dog’s location more obvious. Keep in mind that because of the light, these will cost more and batteries will need to be replaced on a regular basis. If you don’t want to bother with replacing the battery, you may opt for an easier reflective collar, although these will only give off light when a light is shined on them. Choker Chains These choker chains are great for a puppy that pulls or has a strong lead when walking. They are meant to put slight pressure on the dog’s neck to keep them from wanting to pull while on a leash walk. These are also great training devices for other obedience commands, such as sit, stay and heel. There is also a step up from these choker chains, which would be the pinch collar. This collar actually sends little prongs into the neck of the dog to keep them from pulling and is considered safer by some training experts because they are not choking themselves, as with the choker chain.
Electric Fence Collars If you have a yard that is not fenced and have a dog that will need plenty of outdoor time, you may want to invest in an electric fence collar. Of course these are a pretty expensive investment, ranging from just a few hundred to a thousand dollars, depending on whether the size of the yard is small or large. These collars will remain around the dog’s neck whenever it is outside and would send off a slight shock if the dog goes outside the yard boundaries that are set in place. Harness Collars An excellent collar for a short nosed or short necked dog, the harness collars will keep these dogs from feeling choked. Since many short nosed or short-necked dogs often have breathing trouble, this is only exemplified when they are on a leash with a choking collar. Harness dog collars will instead go around their belly so that the leash can be clasped around the top of their back.
Regardless of which dog collars you prefer, they all should have Dog ID tags on them just incase your pup should escape or wander off. Otherwise, whoever finds your dog, won't know where to return him to.
