Dog Bowls
They're Not All The Same
There are endless dog bowls available at your local
pet food store.
Buying one may seem as simple as walking in and selecting a bowl, but this isn’t always the case. There are those that are available for specific reasons that will be beneficial to different dogs, such as small dogs, large dogs and even dogs with ailments. Before you select one for your favorite pooch, carefully consider the type of dog bowls you want to invest in. Remember that it is important to have separate food and water bowls for your dog. Also, if you have more than one dog, it is especially important to spend the extra money purchasing separate food dishes, because many dogs are territorial about their eating habits. Usually it is feasible to have the dogs sharing a water dish, although placing several water dishes throughout the house or having one inside and one outside is always a good idea.

Elevated Bowls Raised or elevated dog bowls may be beneficial for several different reasons. For dogs that are prone to bloat, this may help to ease digestion, as they do not have to bend and strain as far to reach the food. It is also helpful for older dogs that may have trouble bending over as far as they once did to reach their food. Of course a basic reason is that elevated or raised bowls will often help to keep the feeding area, as well as the area of house the bowls are in, cleaner than if the food is placed in bowls right on the floor. Elevated bowls usually come as a set of both a food and a water bowl. Many will come with a set of three bowls to accommodate a family with two dogs.
Ceramic These bowls have started becoming increasingly popular, both because of the ease of washing them in the sink and because of the many different decorative possibilities. Ceramic bowls are as close to designer dog bowls as you can get. Many have cute designs like paw prints or the face of a certain breed of dog. Some can even be specially ordered or made to include your dog’s name inside the bowl or on the outside rim. Portable Although a portable bowl is probably not the best option for long-term use, it is especially handy for families who travel often or who like to go on long walks or hikes. A portable dog bowl is usually made of a mesh or even cotton material that can easily be collapsed and placed in a bag that will often have a clip to hang from a leash or a pair of pants. Once you have arrived at a destination where you need the portable bowl, simply pull it out, open it up and place water or food in the bowl. These are great for long hikes and for car road trips to allow your dog an easy drink of water.
Automatic Dog Feeders Although many veterinarians will advise against an automatic dog feeder for an extended period of time, these bowls can be helpful for families who may often forget to feed their dog or who may be gone on a short trip. The purpose of an automatic feeder is that it will release food regularly and make sure that the bowl is constantly filled so that the human owners do not have to worry about filling it up. Veterinarians worry about dogs potentially overeating if there is a constantly full bowl present, so this is not good for young puppies or other dogs that don’t have much hunger control. Heavy Duty Plastic This type of dog bowl is almost essential for an outdoor location. These bowls with withstand the weather elements better than most other kinds of bowls. As well, these dog bowls are excellent for young and playful pups that might be interested in trying to chew up their bowl after they have eaten all the remaining food in the bowl.
